On June 10, in Virginia Union General Benjamin Butler wanted to stake out a position on the Virginia peninsula near Federal Fort Monroe.
His assault, which was led by lower ranking Union officers, in the area near the church of Bethel, Confederate forces led by D. H. Hill pushed back the Federals. There were over 75 Union casualties to only eight for the South. Butler was later criticized for not leading the Union force.
Union Major Winthop and Colonel Greble were killed in the battle.
Confederate General Pickett reported to Lieutenant General James Longstreet at the US Civil War Battle of Gettysburg. General Pickett led the infamous Confederate charge that crippled his forces on the last day of the 1863 battle.
This early Confederate victory cut off Fort Monroe, which was an important Union stronghold on the Virginia peninsula. Big Bethel is one of several engagements claimed as the war's first battle, and it saw the death of the first enlisted Confederate (Private Wyatt), commemorated by a memorial.
