This message implies that the DVD you're trying to play is the "wrong" region. Many DVD players do have options to make them region free; try searching for the make and model of your DVD player together with "region free", and you should be able to find instructions about making your player region free. Go to: www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks and type in your model number and if they have a hack, you can program your remote to change DVD Region. N America is region 1.
All DVDs have a region code. All DVD players also have a region code. The code of the DVD has to match that of the player. Region 1 means North America. Incidentally, the entire "region" scheme is a scam to artificially segregate markets.
Region 1 is the geographical region code assigned to the United States and Canada for DVD and Blu-ray discs. Region 2 is the region code assigned to Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, and Greenland for DVD and Blu-ray discs. These region codes restrict where the discs can be played based on the player's region code compatibility.
A region 1 DVD is intended to be used in North America. Any BluRay player purchased in North America should play the disc. Bluray players from other regions such as Europe will be expecting to play discs marked with a different region code so are unlikely to pay a region 1 DVD.
A one code DVD is region locked and cannot be played outside of whatever region it has been locked in. A multi region DVD is not region locked and can be used anywhere.
There are 9 different DVD regions. Region 0 or better know as region free, region 1 covering North America, region 2 covering Europe, region 3 for south east Asia, region 4 for South America, Central America, Oceania, and the Caribbean, region 5 India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and parts of eastern Europe and region 6 covering China. Region 7 is reserved for future and media copies. Region 8 is for international venues such as airplanes and finally region ALL which have all 8 regions and can be played anywhere.
