the American colonies had taken a bold step in declaring their independence from Great Britain. their next goal was to form a new government, and to be able to do that, the American people drew from a wide range of political ideas. one source of inspiration was the English law. England had limited the power of its kings and queens in two documents, Megna carta and the English bill of rights.
