Spain

Most of the moden states in South America were part of the empire of Spain. The largest exception is Brazil, which went to Portugal as part of the bad-tempered carving up of the continent. The main languages which survive are significant clues.

The French were also later forced, by treaty, to hand their Canadian territories to the British Empire.
