The country was first discovered by Portugese (from the European point of view) who didn't colonize it but traded with it. Germany claimed it and it remained German until after WWI, when France and Britain split it.

Many European nations colonized west Africa. Most notably it was the French who made most of west Africa under them until last half of 20th century. Algeria, Chad, Niger etc were all colonized by them.

Britain, France and Spain were the first countries to colonize in the New World. Spain was the first, since it was the most powerful European country, adn it colonized Mexico and the West. France's colonies were farther north, in what is now Canada. Britain was last to colonize and it had the 13 bristish colonies split in three colonies: New England, Middle, and Southern colonies.
