The countries that gained t he most territory in Africa were European countries. Countries like Great Britain and France took over much of Africa.

I believe it the be Britain, fir the reasons that Britain has always been strongest country in expansion and domination.
The original impetus for colonizing Africa came from the abolitionist movement. If the western nations controlled the ports, no one would be able to ship slaves from Africa. Then the colonies gained economic value for the European colonizers and the rest of Africa was colonized.
There is no single answer to that. Africa is a continent, not a country. Africa consists of over 50 different countries. Many were occupied by different European countries, and so individual African countries gained independence from different countries at different times.
By conquests from several European nations. The European nations had many firearms, and Africa and India did not have that many at all compared to the Europeans. This caused conquests and how India and Africa became part of the British Empire

It gained independence from Great Britain.
