Hi

In the UK, you will need some evidence of successful school work which need not be a clutch of GCSEs but, I can tell you that the core qualities will include how you interview and how you express enthusiasm and the commitment to work hard.

You will need to be a minimum of average intelligence and be able to learn and there is a lot to learn. Things have changed from the old days when wood cutting machinists worked in synergy with joiners in large workshops. Training in the form of an apprenticeship is now only three years but every month counts. Someone once said, to be a carpenter and joiner, you need a body as strong as Hercules and the brain of a professor - there's a lot of truth in that.

Remember this, there are fewer apprenticeships on offer out there these days so anyone with at least C grades in Maths, English and of course, Design and Technology and showing keenness at interview and commitment to attend college and pass exams will get the jobs. Good luck.
