All of the northeast had harsh weather then and still does today. I read a newspaper report in 1880 about how much snow Washington DC experienced that winter. With the spring thaw they found a man on his horse sitting frozen in place.

Generally speaking, the Winter weather in the New England section of the United States is very harsh compared to the Middle Atlantic states ( former colonies ). The northern location of New England in relation to the Middle Atlantic area brings much more snow and cold weather then states ( colonies ) to the south of it. While its true that parts of New York state receive harsh Winter weather, for the most part the southern area of New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland have less frigid and stormy Winter weather.
