Should military training be made compulsory?

If you are referring to military training alone, no. If you trained all citizens to be soldiers and most of those citizens went on to civilian jobs, those civilians would most likely take away from the training that a person that will actually become a soldier needs. If you are referring to military service being made compulsory, I still say no under the current circumstances. By soldiers volunteering, you are getting recruits that want to be soldiers, meaning that they will take training more seriously and also be more willing to put their life on the line for the mission. If you require military service, you will be recruiting soldiers that do not want to die or fight, and that could be a liability. Sure, in a war like World War 2 where we were threatened by a nation that could have actually taken us over, there is strength in numbers. But in the battles we fight today, where their is no threat of invasion, where we only fight insurgents that try to kill as many soldiers as possible, with no real hope of taking over america, then there is only strength in well trained soldiers. Larger numbers would only mean a higher amount of people that could be hit IED's or ambushes, and result in a high casualty count. Our miltary is now smaller but better trained, but most of the people actually want to serve, which makes their service that much more great.
