The major or most populous tribe in Minnestoa are the Chippewas, also known as the Ojibwas. However there are also some small groups of Dakotas. Many different tribes are likely represented in the Twin Cities.
Long before Minnesota was established as a state the native inhabitants of the area were Ojibwe bands in the north and north-east, with many different Sioux tribes in the south and west.
Cheyenne and Arapaho bands may have originally lived in part of the area before moving westwards after obtaining horses.
Later, in the 1800s, Minnesota was at least temporary home to sections of the Fox, Iowa, Missouri, Omaha, Oto, ttawa, Sac, Ponca and Winnebago tribes.
The earliest recorded tribe in Minnesota was the Anishinaabe, followed by the Dakota.
