Long before Braidwood existed the area was occupied by the Peoria and Kaskaskia tribes, both parts of the large Algonquian-speaking group known as Illiniwek (which was said "Illinois" by French explorers, eventually giving the state its name).

Only a short distance further north were the Winnebago or Ho-chunk, sworn enemies of the Illini and almost continual warfare took place between them.
