Grace O'Malley sailed on galleys. She was an Irish woman who lived during the 16th century. She is most famous for being a female pirate during this time. She was born in 1530 and died in 1603.

It is thought that it originally came into English in the mid 16th century and is perhaps of Irish origin; compare with the Irish exclamations ababú, abú, used in battle cries.
Portraits of the women from the 16th Century in England might look similar because, at the time, portraits had to be drawn and painted. There was only a handful of people at that time who were skilled enough to do this type of work.
