Commodore Perry hauled down his flag (DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP) and boarded one of the Lawerence's long boats, where he directed to the Brig Niagara. He hauled his flag up and resumed the battle. The US fleet (and the British), seeing in the Commodore's resolve, also solidified and forced the surrender of the British Great Lake's Fleet.
