Seismic waves are waves that are a result of What are Seismic Waves activity in the earth. There are body and surface waves. Body waves happen inside the earth and are called P (longitudinal) and S (transverse) waves. Surface waves happen on the earths surface and are called Raleigh and love waves. These waves are mixtures of P & S waves.they are both transverse waves and compressional.

THERE FOR SEISMIC WAVES ARE TRANSVERSE! :)

There are actually two types of earthquake / seismic waves that could be said to be causing a material to move up and down.

The S-wave which is a transverse body wave and the Rayleigh wave which is a surface wave that causes surface material to move in ellipses normal to the direction of wave motion. This in effect also causes the material to move up and down.

How is an earthquake like a stuck door?

It can crush your home, and it can cause exits to be hard to reach

Which earthquake waves are the first to be recorded on a seismometer and are the fastest?

P-waves which are a compression or pressure wave are the fastest seismic waves. As they are the fastest they will reach the seismic station before any of the other seismic waves and be recorded first. Seismologists can use the difference between the arrival times of different seismic waves to calculate the distance and ultimately the location of the earthquakes epicentre. Was the Japan earthquake felt in Florida?

The magnitude 9.0 Japan earthquake in 2011 was not felt in Florida but the waves from the tsunami did reach the coast of Hawaii. You can visit the USGS Did-you-feel-it web site to check if people reported an earthquake in your area.

Did admirial Robert E peary reach the North Pole first?

No, although Peary and Henson are credited with being first to the North Pole, there is now considerable doubt that they did because of Peary's omission to produce records of observed data for steering, for the direction (variation) of the compass, and for his longitudinal position at any time.
