The United States did fight a war with Mexico from 1846-1848 over the right of Texas to secede from Mexico and join the United States. The war was also part of the Manifest Destiny strategy laid out by President James Polk to expand American territory all the way to the Pacific coastline. This conflict is known as the Mexican-American War and resulted in the acquisition of the Mexican Cession, including what is now known as California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, parts of Oregon, and most of Arizona. There were also raids into the United States by the infamous bandit Pancho Villa to regain these lost territories 60 years later.
