The Minnesota River starts at Big Stone Lake near Ortonville, Minnesota. At this point you will also find the Laurentian Divide. The Minnesota flows in a southerly direction to the Mississippi and the Red River flows north to Lake Winnipeg in Canada. There are times during floods that the continental divide will be crested and waters that are supposed to flow north go south.
