In the US, pathologists are physicians with an MD degree (4 years of medical school + board certification, steps 1,2 and 3). After medical school to be able to practice anatomic pathology (AP) and clinical pathology (CP), one has to sucessfully complete a 4 year residency program, and pass the AP/CP boards. Fellowship programs exist for a number of subspecialties including Dermatopathology, Hematopathology and Molecular and Genetic Pathology.
