Starting from the right atrium, blood flows into the right ventricle then into the pulmonary arteries. The blood branches throughout the pulmonary trunk and down to the level of the pulmonary capillaries. At this level carbon dioxide dissolves out of the blood and the erythrocytes (red blood cells) pick up oxygen.
