Kiev. But the thing is that now Kiev's not in Russia.
Prince Vladimir the Great. Vladimir decided to adopt a monotheistic religion and sent advisors to investigate Islam, Judaism and several sects of Christianity. He decided against Islam because of the ban on alcohol. Although he was impressed by the Greek Orthodox churches and worship, his decision to adopt Orthodox Christianity also had political purposes.
Because Roman Catholicism did not even exist at that time (988 AD) when Prince Vladimir of Kiev decided that Orthodox Christianity was the true religion for his people.
Russia did not have a national religion until around 1000 AD when Vladimir the Great sent envoys abroad to investigate various religions including Judaism, Islam and Christianity. After the envoys returned, Vladimir decided on the Christian faith of the Byzantine Church which he deemed to be the most compatible with the Russian way of life, and subsequently established the Russian Orthodox Church.
You probably wonder why do Russians Orthodox people celebrate Christmas on January 7th? Why not on December 25th?Well, the reason is that the Russian Orthodox Church still lives according to the old Julian Calendar, which is currently 13 days behind the Gregorian Calendar, which is adopted by most countries in the world (and by the Russian government). When in the end of 1917 the Bolshevik government decided to adopt Gregorian calendar, the Russian Orthodox church decided not to follow the rules set by the incresingly oppresive civil authorities. Part of the reason was to protest against the Bolsheviks and their interference in church affairs. Another reason, perhaps, was to stick to the older rules, the ways in which generations of Russian Christians were praising the Lord, observing holidays, etc.
You have your wording incorrect. There is Eastern Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic. Both are different Churches. Eastern Orthodox: The Eastern Orthodox Church was once one Church along with the Roman Catholic Church until the Great Schism in 1054. After 1054, they have been two separate Churches. The difference easiest to recognize is their view of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope). The Roman Catholic Church believes that the Bishop of Rome has the final say in defining doctrine whereas the Eastern Orthodox Church believes Church doctrine can only change when it has been decided in an Ecumenical Council such as the seven that were held before the churches split. Eastern Catholic: The Eastern Catholic Churches are former Eastern Orthodox Churches that have enter back into communion with the Holy See. They still practice using Eastern Rites, however. (Ex. Married men can be ordained Priests, the Nicene Creed is read without the Filioque clause, etc.) Hope I answered your question. ~God Bless
The Russian decided to defect.
The Christian Church split into two separate churches in 1504, because of friction between the pope in Rome and the patriarch in Constantinople. The church in the West became the Roman Catholic Church, and the church in the East became the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Christianity is only a sin when they try to force there beliefs on others.Christianity is about love and peace so Christianity cannot be a sin. God decided what was and wasn't a sin so He wouldn't make his own religion a sin.
