Russia did not have a national religion until around 1000 AD when Vladimir the Great sent envoys abroad to investigate various religions including Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
After the envoys returned, Vladimir decided on the Christian faith of the Byzantine Church which he deemed to be the most compatible with the Russian way of life, and subsequently established the Russian Orthodox Church.
The majority religion in Russia is Russian Orthodox Christianity.
