In 1940, a Spanish-born Soviet agent, Ramon Mercader, murdered Trotsky at his home in Mexico City. He plunged an ice pick into his head, Trotsky screamed the most terrible scream and died a day later. Ramon Mercader got a beating from Trotskys staff but Trotsky sparred him as he said he now had a story to tell. :0
Leon Trotsky became a political enemy of Josef Stalin. Stalin's fear of any descent from his policies were tantamount to treason. Stalin believed that if one of the original Bolsheviks, such as a Trotsky, could gather strength, there could be a revolution against Stalin's regime. Therefore Stalin put a price on Trosky's head. Trotsky was murdered in Mexico.
Ramon Mercader. He was an agent of the NKVD, the Soviet Internal Affairs Department on August 20, 1940. He was severely injured by an ice axe that hit him and died of trauma a day later died in the hospital after surgery. Previously, the USSR had attempted to kill him, but with no success until then. Ramon Mercader, likely an agent of Stalin. The KGB was not around until after Stalin's death. The story is that Stalin had some an agent of the NKVD - the Peoples Commissariat for Internal Affairs, a public secret police system under Stalin notorious for running the Gulags - named Ramon Mercader, from Barcelona Spain. This man claimed to have been born in Tehran under a diplomat for a father, and was a Belgian journalist named Jacques Mornard who bought a fake passport on the black market. This person was released in prison after 20 years in 1960 and went between Cuba and the USSR (where he was apparently treated like a hero.) He was never able to get back to Spain fortunately, even though he wanted to.
Trotsky was not exiled to any particular country. He was first exiled to Alma Atta in Siberia then ordered to leave the country, but found none willing to take him right away. He eventually went to Turkey, then to France, then to Norway, then to Mexico. It was in Mexico that he was assassinated on orders of Joseph Stalin by a Soviet agent named Ramon Mercader in 1940.

Joseph Stalin gained total control of the Soviet Communist Party and of the Soviet Union. Trotsky was a true communist and political rival of Stalin. He was killed in Mexico.
