"neutral" in the sense that they never took sides in a political sense. mainly because they were quite well situated and defended by the alps. there was also a large economical benefit in being the world's bankers - which by thier very nature have to be impartial/neutral from a business point of view, however morally perverted that has turned out to be nowadays since the Swiss banking secrecy has been compromised
