Note: Tithing was one of the 613 Mosiac laws. After Jesus died on the Cross to fulfill the law there is no mandate or command to tithe in the New Testament after Jesus went to the Cross.

Old Testament: LAW

Malachi 3:8 "you have robbed me in tithes and offerings"

Malachi 3:9 "You are cursed with a curse"

VS

New Testament : GRACE

Galatians 3:13 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by being made a curse for us for as the scriptures say cursed is anyone who hangs from a tree

Galatians 3:14 "That the Blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jeus Christ: that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Colossians 2: 14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.

Galatins 2:21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

2nd Corinthian 9:7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

The giving of a tithe (10%) of the spoils Abraham received after battle, he gave to the High Priest of God - Melchizedek (some think this is Shem and others say it is the pre-incarnate Jesus then as the Word):

Genesis 14:18-20New King James Version (NKJV) Abram and Melchizedek18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said:

"Blessed be Abram of God Most High,

Possessor of heaven and earth;

20 And blessed be God Most High,

Who has delivered your enemies into your hand."

And he gave him a tithe of all.

The law of tithing is presented in Leviticus 27. It is referred to in other OT books but this stands out in my mind:

Malachi 3:8New King James Version (NKJV) Do Not Rob God

8 "Will a man rob God?

Yet you have robbed Me!

But you say,

'In what way have we robbed You?'

In tithes and offerings.

In the Old Testament, God gave His tithes to the support of the Levites - priesthood of Israel:

Numbers 18:21New King James Version (NKJV) Tithes for Support of the Levites21 "Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work which they perform, the work of the tabernacle of meeting.

With the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, some administrative changes were made to the Old Covenant and He became our Eternal High Priest and established God's Church on Earth. Paul tells us to give what we can to this work in support. But as noted above, we are also to support all as needed:

Acts 20:35New King James Version (NKJV)
35 I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

Is it a major part of the old law that said that people are cursed if they do not pay tithes?

AnswerThere is nothing in the Bible that requires people to pay tithes. Of course, churches need funds, and some raise money by requesting tithes. However, the notion that one is cursed if one does not pay the tithe suggests that, for that church, mammon has become more important than God.
