The left atrioventricular (AV valve) is also called the Mitral valve.
The right atrioventricular valve is also called the tricuspid valve. It gets this name because it has three leaflets.

When the atria contracts (atrial systole), the ventricules fill with blood, causing the mitral valve to close in order to avoid the blood from flowing back into the atrium. Hope it helps!!
The left atrioventricular valve stops the back-flow of blood by only being opened if a large force or pressure is behind it (in the left atrium) and is closed if a large force or pressure is in front of it (in the left ventricle).

I believe you are referring to the "mitral" valve. It is also known as the bicuspid valve. It is the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle.
There are two Atrioventricular Valves in the heart. The first one, on the right side of the heart, is called the Tricuspid Valve (it has three 'flaps'). On the left side, the Atrioventricular Valve is called the Bicuspid or Mitral Valve (it has two 'flaps')
