Thomas Jefferson wanted to buy New Orleans from the french so that farners could always use the tradeing port there, but the french were in dept with their expensive wars in Europe, so he decided to sell all of Louisiana to the Americans to pay off war debt. Jefferson thought at first that this trade was unconstitutional.

Jefferson hoped to get control of the commerce trade in the west. He wanted to expand the US, which is one reason he wanted to make the Louisianan Purchase.
