In the days of sail, ships could find themselves becalmed in the doldrums. The doldrums is a low-pressure area around the equator where the prevailing winds are calm.
If you took a trip near the equator, you would expect to find the trade winds. These are steady winds that blow from the east towards the west, between the equator and 30 degrees latitude in both hemispheres. Trade winds are characterized by their consistency and are commonly experienced in tropical regions.
unequal heating and cooling cause wind but when large parts of earth get uneven heating, it causes prevailing winds. I'm sorry that I can't find a second one. Suspicious.
You can find the South Pole south of the Equator -- on the continent of Antarctica.
North Texas is close to the equator, but south Texas is closer to the equator.

I know that Michigan (and most of the Great Lakes area) has "westerly" prevailing winds. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find out whether that means the winds blow from the west (to the east) or to the west (from the east). I had a weather vane that seemed to point West pretty consisantly, which makes me believe that "westerly" prevailing winds must blow towards the west, although I can't say definitely. A Westerly wind, is blowing out of or comming from the west and moving east. So when you read a weather report it will say "NW at 9mph" meaning it is comming out of a northwesterly direction moving to the southeast and obviously the wind speed is 9mph.
There are many different types and species of penguins. Most types live south of the equator however the Galapagos penguin is one of the only species that one will find north of the equator.
Global winds are local winds.
No, the equator does not pass through the continent of North America.
get a globe, find virgin ISLANDS, then find the EQUATOR. if these islands are above the equator its the northern hemishphere, if the islands are below the equator then it is the southern hem.
Well these days with GPS - you find your latitude - 0 is the equator 90 is the North pole and it is relatively simple math from there

The area around the equator is tropical in nature with much rainfall, Deserts do not occur there.
