McClellan was also chosen to be a US observer of the European Crimean War. He also invented a new cavalry saddle. His 18 month career in the US army during the US Civil War was short but extensive. He is given great credit for making the Army of the Potomac into a well trained and organized army. He became Lincoln's general in chief, but later he was removed from that position. His greatest campaigns were the Peninsula campaign which was a defeat and the Battle of Antietam, where he won a close victory.
Lincoln later had to relieve him of his duty as the commander of the Army of the Potomac. McClellan officially resigned his commission in the US army in 1863.
