On May 3, 1863, the Battle of Chancellorsville was still undecided. Union General John Sedgwick's 6th Corps stormed Marye's Heights with a daring bayonet charge. Outnumbered Confederate forces under General Jubal Early. In a sense, this was a bit of revenge for the Union disaster at Fredericksburg where Confederates held the Heights and ripped General Burnside's army to pieces.
In May of 1864, at the Battle of Spotsylvania, Union Colonel Emery Upton led 5,000 troops in a fixed bayonet charge. His advance however, was not supported by other Union forces, and it faded as night fell upon the battlefield.

The Union Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg Penn, at the battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War.
A "firefight" is a term that began in usage in 1896 well after the civil war, but it's meaning may apply to the methods of skirmish used in the civil war. Since the Remington repeater rifle was invented during the civil war rapid fire was a new battle tactic. So, I am not sure that a civil war description can be given of what we would consider a modern firefight.

Although the bayonet appeared as a weapon attached to an infantryman's musket as early as the middle of the 17th century, it was not a standard weapon until the beginning of the 18th century. Then, most European armies made use of this "knife like" spear attached to the barrel of muskets. The bayonet extended the standard musket to perhaps a six to seven foot "spear" and useful in hand to hand combat. It was not effective against cavalry soldiers with long lances. Often times the bayonet was not always attached to a musket before a battle began. In the course of battle when ammunition was used up or when it was clear that it was needed, soldiers could attach it in an infantry charge. In the US Civil War, the bayonet was not viewed as an essential item for the infantry, however, within any number of battles, the frontline of a charging force were so close to the enemy, there was no room for a soldier to sight and shot at the enemy. In such cases, the bayonet was essential.
The bayonet was an important weapon in many US Civil War battles. In close quarters, the bayonet was used as the common infantryman were not issued side arms. Hand to hand battles were frequent and were famously used in many battles. For example, bayonets were in use in Seven Day's battles, Second Bull Run and Spotsylvania to mention just a few of the battles where bayonets had a role in the outcome of any given battle.
