The USS Liberty (AGTR-5), a Belmont class technical research ship, was attacked by Israeli torpedo boats and Air Force planes in the Mediterranean on 8 June 1967. The attack killed 34 crewmembers (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and a civilian), and wounded 171 others. While the official statement is that the attack was an accident of mistaken identity, the crew of the Liberty were under orders to not discuss it for decades afterward under penalty of criminal conviction.
