Between 1619 and 1865, slavery was a prevalent institution in the United States. Millions of African people were forcibly brought to America to be enslaved, primarily in the Southern states. Slavery created a brutal system where enslaved individuals were treated as property and subjected to inhumane conditions and labor. The abolitionist movement gained momentum, leading to the American Civil War and eventually the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which declared enslaved individuals in rebel states to be freed. The institution of slavery was officially abolished with the passage of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865.
