Historians credit US Theodore Roosevelt as being the first US president to create what is commonly called a press conference. This involved giving the newspaper media access to the president's policies and actions.
By some accounts, the first press conference was completely accidental. The press secretary of newly elected president Woodrow Wilson invited a few reporters to come by his office to say hello, a common practice when he was governor. But since being president was more important than being governor, more than 100 reporters showed up and crowded into Mr. Wilson's office. The date was March 15, 1913, and it set an interesting precedent: previously, presidents had rarely held group meetings with reporters, and certainly did not have regular sit-downs with them. But from this awkward beginning, the press began expecting to sit with the president (or his press secretary) and ask questions.
Woodrow Wilson held the first presidential press conference in March 1913. John Kennedy held the first live televised press conference in January, 1961.
the press secretary meets with the press when the president can't. he/she tells the press what the president is doing on topics Because at times they have to act like the president at a press conference. Plus has to tell the press what the President is doing with problems and have to answer questions that they are hit with.
US President Theodore Roosevelt was the first US president to create and give what we now take for granted, the press conference. Theodore Roosevelt created what some historians call a "bridgehead" to the White House. As an aside, Roosevelt also created the White House and relegated the term of Executive Mansion to the historians.
