Because it all depended on what they believed in. If you believed in slavery you mostly fought for the south. If you thought that slavery was wrong you fought for the north.

The US Civil War was not intended to be a war to end slavery. That is clear and few would disagree with that statement. The South, however, saw the Union headed by a president who believed that slavery was wrong. Even though Lincoln promised to leave slavery alone where it already existed. For the South however, it believed that sooner or later their culture would have to change if it remained a part of the US. Their view was short sighted, but that's too easy a way to find fault. If there had it not been for slavery, though, the two sides would have not had "two sides".
