The Rock of Chickamauga was the nickname of General George Henry Thomas. General Thomas was a Virginian who chose to remain with the Union during the Civil War and served most of the war in the West. He is considered by most American Civil War historians to one of the top three Federal Generals of the conflict (along with Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman).
He acquired the title "Rock of Chickamuaga" for his famous stand at the battle of Chickamauga where his brave defense against the rampant Confederates while the Army of the Cumberland broke and ran made him a national hero.
He would also quired the nickname "Sledge of Nashville" when he broke the back of the Army of Tennessee at the battle of Nashville.

They attempted a counter concentration that called for Union troops in Georgia and as faraway as Minnesota. None of these troops were able to reach Chickamauga until after the battle was over.
