Union representative Frank Blair Sr. was the father of Lincoln's former postmaster general. He was also a founder of the Republican Party. Also, Blair had been a friend of Jefferson Davis before the war. He approached President Lincoln in December of 1864 concerning a visit to Davis and try to reach a peace agreement. Lincoln did agree to this however, in no uncertain terms was this to stop Union military actions. Talks were held at Hampton Roads, however, despite real efforts to forge a peace agreement, nothing came out of this conference and the war continued.
