Giuseppe Verdi, of Italy. Aida, by Giuseppe Verdi, was written in 1871, with first performance on 24th Dec 1871 at the Cairo Opera House. Although the general feeling is that this was commissioned for the opening of the Suez Canal, this is not correct. It was commissioned by the Khedive of Egypt for the Italian Theatre in Cairo.

The Springer Opera House is a historic theatre in downtown Columbus, Georgia. It was first opened 21st February 1871 and was named the State Theatre of Georgia. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1978.

Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, commissioned Verdi to write the now famous opera Aida, for performance in January 1871, paying him 150,000 francs, but the premiere was delayed because of the Franco-Prussian War. Contrary to popular belief, the opera was not written to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.

The opera house where most of the action is set in Phantom of the Opera is called the Palais Garnier. It was built in 1871 and is in Paris, France. Unlike in the musical, the opera house is still open today.
