I am not clear on this. I know Henry Clay played a big role in perpetuating slavery. He engineered the Great Compromise that kept slave and non-slave states even. So states came in two at a time one slave and one non-slave. I have heard that Lincoln considered the slaves as abducted and thought they should be returned to Africa. I believe he made a proclamation to free the slaves in the South, not the North. I have been told his main goal was to preserve the Union. The constitution was silent on recession. Lincoln took his stance from his Oath of Office. The foundation for this also comes from all the negotiations that took place over the years to maintain the federal government. My take is he didn't have so much effort for the slaves as he did the Union. Slaves worked all about the White House and the North continued to hold slaves. I also heard that his idea of removing the slaves to Africa was not well received in the South. It is part of the reason he was assassinated. These are oral history of the South. I would like a fact check on these local beliefs. I heard that a comprehensive book about Lincoln was just published. I want to read it.
He did not think slavery should be abolished, but he did not want it to spread to new states
Lincoln did not like slavery and wanted to end the practice eventually but he was not an abolitionist. He respected the Constitutional right to own slaves.
He opposed it.
the free soil party's stance on slavery was the buying and selling of slaves
Breckinridge's stance on the issue of slavery differed from Lincoln's because Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery into the territories and Breckinridge insisted that the government be required to protect slavery in any territory.
One way in which Lincoln attempted to reassure the South about his stance on slavery was by telling the South he had no intention to interfere with slavery where it already existed. The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865.
i...have no idea
The Republicans opposed the extension of slavery , but they did not propose abolishing it where it already existed.

It was not until 1514 that, bartolome de las casas had a complete change of heart and reversed his stance on slavery and also the entire topic of Spanish mistreatment of Native Americans.
