The US Republican party (GOP) first formed as an offshoot of the Whig Party in 1854. It was composed of Whigs who opposed slavery and Democrats of the Free Soil faction. Several parties have been known as the "American Party", including one from the elections of 1876, 1880, and 1884, and one that was formed in 1887. It was another name for the Ku Klux Klan party in 1924. The group that nominated Herman Kolpack in 1952 was likewise known as the American Party. The name was finally trademarked in 2010.

The United States Presidential Election of 1848 saw three candidates fight out for a place in the White House, one each from the Whig and Democratic parties, and one from the newly-formed Free Soil Party. The Free Soil party was dissolved just six years later, having fought in this, and the next, Presidential election, in 1852.
