DNA is made up of a phosphate group, a deoxyribose (sugar), and a nitrogen base.

The nitrogen base can be broken down into 4 types(nucleotides): adenine, guanine, thymine, or cytosine; and categorized into purines: adenine and guanine; and pyrimidines: cytosine or thymine. *Thymine is replaced by uracil in RNA. Thymine is only found in DNA.

Specific purine and pyrimidine bonds are mandatory. A goes with T (or in RNA, U); and C bonds with G.

ex) DNA:

A-T

C-G

RNA:

A-U

C-G

Is Ca3(PO4)2 organic?

This compound is calcium phosphate. It is inorganic because it does not contain the element carbon.

Does an organic compound contain nitrogen?

Some do, but not all. The one element needed for a compound to be considered organic is carbon.

Is phosphate organic or inorganic?

No, ATP is an organic compound. The full name is adenosine triphosphate, and the adenosine part is made of two carbon rings interlocked with each other. The three phosphate groups are inorganic, and when one is removed from the ATP molecule, the resulting phosphate group is typically notated as Pi, for inorganic phosphate.

What the elements of an organic compound?

An organic compound is one in which one or more carbon atoms are linked to hydrogen, oxygen or nitrogen atoms. Sometimes an organic compound will contain phosphorus or sulfur but organic compounds with these elements are rare.
