In the American South, many people come from Ireland, Scotland, and England
Going directly west you would come to Canada. Continuing on you would come to Russia and at that point you are technically east of the British Isles. Countries like Iceland, Greenland and the United States of America are not directly west, as they are north or south of the area that is due west. So in reality there is only one country west of the British Isles, which is Canada.
South Devons originated from England. More specifically, they originated from the counties of Southern Devon and Cornwall of Southwestern England.
The Romans conquered the south of England in 46.
Surrey is a county of England, UK.Most people living in Surrey do not have Irish, Welsh or Scottish accents, nor do they have northern or 'west country' accents. Many will have 'London' accents, Surrey being very near London. However, people from many parts of England now live in Surrey, and it would be very difficult to spot a 'typical' Surrey accent, because there isn't one!Of course, anyone born and bred in Surrey, and whose parents and grandparents have always lived in Surrey, and who went to school on Surrey, who work in Surrey and whose friends are all from Surrey, would doubtless have a 'Surrey' accent. However, it would not be totally dissimilar from the general accent of most people who live in the South East of England. In fact, it would probably be totally indistinguishable from them, even by other 'South East Englanders' living 100 miles away on the East coast of South East England. As a generalisation, a Surrey accent could come under the vague description 'modified received pronunciation.' This doesn't help us much, but it might help distinguish a 'Surrey' accent from, say, a Birmingham or Scottish one!For examples of Surrey 'accents' (and other regional accents) see Related links below.

I read in a book on the English language that southern accents are an off-shoot of African accents. When the slave owners kids would play with the slaves kids they would pick up their African accents. This eventually evolved into the southern accents that you uhear today.
