At the beginning of the War, the US decided to follow the same policy that was followed in Europe. Truman went before the Security Council of the UN to ask for military support in order to protect South Korea; this resolution was later passed. It was discussed that the North would be kept on their side of the 38th parallel. President Truman stated, "If we let Korea down, the Soviets will keep right on going and swallow up one piece of Asia after another… If we were to let Asia go, the Near East would collapse and no telling what would happen in Europe… Korea is like the Greece of the Far East. If we are tough enough now, if we stand up to them like we did in Greece three years ago, they won't take any more steps." However, later General MacArthur, in charge of the UN troops began to feel confident and decided to switch to the policy of 'rollback' which would mean liberating the North Koreans from Communist rule and reuniting Korea. Yet, later Truman decided that the US needed to go back to its original aim and of course MacArthur disagreed. He stated that "Here in Asia is where the Communist conspirators have elected to make their play for global conquest. Here we fight Europe's war with arms while the diplomats there are sill fighting it with words." MacArthur was then stripped away of his command. Later a military arimstance was finally signed at panmunjom in July 1953.

The term containment has been and can be used for anything; the containment of a disease; the containment of water; containing a fire. Or containing a criminal in a building until he is either overtaken or surrenders to law enforcement. Containment was used in Europe, Asia, and Latin America to contain problems encountered by those regions. During the cold war the "term" CONTAINMENT was used to control communism. That was a name used to prevent the spread of communism. Military force was used to prevent that spread. Either by just showing up and letting them see the military force; as happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Or by actually USING the military force by killing them in war; as happened in the Korean War and Vietnam War.
The Korean War was the first LIMITED WAR fought in the ATOMIC AGE. Limited to the use of CONVENTIONAL Weapons only.

Expansion of the war could have meant the use of atomic weapons.
The US used a naval embargo to prevent any missiles or related material from reaching Cuba.
He learned better.
No atomic bombs were used in the Korean War and there were never any plans to use them. Possibly the existence of atomic weapons had some small effect.
