Honesty in your relationship is one of the things that helps a relationship. if you are honest with each other and don't let hurts build up but forgive quickly, your relationship will thrive instead of break.
Accountability for each person is important also. Not that you have to account for everything you do during a day, but as far as the relationship goes, be accountable to each other. For instance, if someone you both know makes you uncomfortable to be around, tell your partner so that you can hopefully avoid contact with that person.
Letting the other person do what they are good at, and trusting them in it. For example, my wife is great with shopping and money management, so I let her handle those things and trust her to do a good job. We are still talking about what to buy and what to spend, but she pretty much handles those things. When I go shopping for her, I am accountable to her for the money I spend and why so that we don't run short. It is not that she gets mad at me, but that I want to discuss what I bought so I can improve the next time I go to the store.
If your relalionship is bad in your day to day existence, for instance if you are arguing all the time, then what happens in intimacy doesn't matter as far as I am concerned. To be a good relationship, it must have God at its center with both people living the Christian life. Then be humble with each other so you can work out the difficulties every relationship has. If you don't have a peaceful relationship with the other person, intimacy will be greatly affected. So keep it peaceful in the right ways, and watch how your relationship will grow and blossom.
