The federal government responded to the Pullman Strike by using troops to control the striking workers. Later, Labor Day was designated as an official holiday in an effort to conciliate the organized labor movement.
Richard Olney was appointed as a special federal attorney with responsibility for dealing with the strike. He obtained an injunction barring union leaders from supporting the strike and demanding that the strikers cease their activities or face being fired.
