He fixed the tank on which Guru Amardas ji used to sing hymns and Guru Ramdas ji used to give sermons to the congregation, at that place Arjan Dev ji built the building of Shri Harminder Sahib! Harminder Sahib means Temple of Hari, House of God. The entire map of the building of Harminder Sahib was prepared by Guru Arjan Dev ji with his own hands and its service was handed over to Baba Budha ji and its foundation was laid by Muslim fakir Sai Mian Mir ji. The four doors of Harminder Sahib mean that people of any caste and religion can come to the Gurudwara without any discrimination!! One way to go means that there is only one way to reach God. This bridge from Darshini Deori to Sachkhand has been built with the flour of Mah di dal, which was ground with a hand-operated mill at that time. Inside this bridge, there are small rooms, inside of which the Guru Granth Sahib is lit, and the Bhog of Shri Akhand Path Sahib is found. The height of Shri Harmandar Sahib Ji was kept lower than the height of the city. When Baba Budha Sahib Ji asked about this, Guru Sahib said that God is found only by those who live lowly. According to Sikhism,God is one who is the same for all religions but depending on where each religion originated, they give different names to God. And so the same God has so many different names but they all refer to same God.Hari and Har are among the many names which Sikh Gurus have used in their hymns in reference to God. Therefore, Sikh Gurus named one of the Gurudwara (Sikh place of worship) as Harminder. Please note its not Harminder Mandir but only Harminder and with respect we call it Harminder Sahib. It mean adobe of God.Its open from fours sides, signifying the acceptance of anybody from all corners. We also use the term Darbar Sahib, that is because Guru Granth Sahib Ji is always present there and as such the word Darbar means 'Royal Court', so it only signify the importance. Please be advised as I read it from your question, as you mentioned being Hindu and the word Minder is used in Harminder, so that may give you some other thought. Why 1984 Sikh riots happens?
In June 1984 Indian Army stormed the Harminder Sahib also popularly known as Golden Temple because they suspected terrorists hiding in the Harminder Sahib. The attack took place during the celebration of the birthday of one of the Sikh Gurus. On 31st October 1984, Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of Indian was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguard. This assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi led to an Anti Sikh Riots all over India especially Northern India. These anti Sikh Riots were politically motivated rather than a public reaction and Sikhs till today are asking for the justice as well bringing those people who were involved for the cause of these riots to be punished.
