Feliz the Cat is the oldest animated cartoon, newspaper , silent film, and yes, fromthe beginning-partly due to historical accident a soaky-head puppet on a test turntable, the first animal character to appear on tv! Later a regular lline-up[ of Televised Felix Cartoons into the fifties and sixties.
Of what are popularily referred to as animated, movie ( originally) later TV cartoons of an animal nature- Felix the Cat, by the King Feature Syndicate. He was also- by accident, a prop of a Soaky puppet head mounted on a turntable for TV technicians wanting a (moving) target- the first TV cartoon character, soon, early in 47, the movie Felix cartoons were adapted to TV, once the bugs were worked out.
Cartoons- originally made for movies- with sound- Bugs Bunny l927, Mickey Mouse l928 ( both still active) Felix The cat dates to about l923, originally silent, later with sound. By an historical accident, ( a Soaky puppet head used as a prop on a turntable to see if the primitive TV could follow moving targets- Felix the Cat was the first TV cartoon character. As soon as Tv was practical- the Black and white movie cartoons were pressed into service.
Limited to those still around on the sets- Felix The CAT, A product of the King Features Syndicate- is probably the oldest animated cartoon- dating from maybe l923 in the silent film era- there the word balloons from the newspaper strip would be retained. By accident of history- a Felix soaky-head puppet head being used as a focusing prop- Felix, was accidentally the first Television cartoon character!- as the movie-type cartoons were on the shelf- they were readily adapted to TV when that medium came viable- and as mentioned Felix had opened the door- the experimental prop mentioned earlier. Felix- l923, Bugs Bunny- l927 ( at the State theatre) Mickey Mouse did not get up steam ( steamboat Willie) until l928 so he is by no means the oldest animal cartoon oint he animated scene.
I assume you are using animation in the popular sense of animated cartoons. The first- thus oldest successful animated Animal cartoon was Felix The Cat, circa l923-25 - he was already making the newspaper scene and was the subject of a novel trick clock- the cat"s tail was the pendulum. The eyes also moved sideways as the clock ran. despite the pendulum, all the ones I saw were electric. Felix- actually a plastic-Soaky-head puppet of Felix mounted on a phonograph turntable for test shows- was indirectly the first TV cartoon- and as soon as TV was practical, movie cartoons of Felix rolled off the lines. The Cat clearly antedates both Bugs Bunny (l927) and Mickey Mouse (l928) and was produced by King Features Syndicate who also ran- Popeye the Sailor.
who is the father of animation People might say Walt Disney, but there were animated movie cartoons, based on comic strips for the most part, pre-Disney. It is believed that Felix the Cat-in black and white, was the earliest Movie animated cartoon by the King Features Syndicate and by accident of history- a soaky-head puppet used as a test subject on a turntable in l947- the first Television cartoon- regular movie-based Felix shorts were also probably the first regularily televised. Chronology as follows (movie cartoons): Felix the Cat (silent)-l923, Bugs Bunny (sound)-l927 earliest Mickey Mouse- (originally called steamboat willie)-l928. Does that answer your question? Sorcar, Jr. and P.C. Sorcar, Young."
Warner cartoons are older. they were phased-in in l927 as sound movies ( also by Warner) were introduced ( Jazz Singer best known original talkie) The cartoons were for entertainment while the main movie projectors were being rewound- so they tended to be short subjects- For example Bugs Bunny. The earliest Bugs cartoons made the movie house circuit ( literally, on the projectors) in l927. Thus Bugs is older as a movie cartoon than Mickey Mouse ( earliest Mickey Mouse came out in l928 as Steamboat Willie) Felix the cat antedates both Disney and Warner cartoons and was both the first movie ( motion picture type) and TV cartoon- the latter an accident of sorts. They were testing a TV camera and used a soaky-head puppet head of Felix as a prop- but still technically a TV cartoon! regular ( filmed) Felix cartoons followed on to the TV screen. Felix the Cat is a product of the King Feature Syndicate, also the producers of Popeye the sailor man.
