I assume you are using animation in the popular sense of animated Cartoons. The first- thus oldest successful animated Animal cartoon was Felix The Cat, circa l923-25 - he was already making the newspaper scene and was the subject of a novel trick clock- the cat"s tail was the pendulum. The eyes also moved sideways as the clock ran. despite the pendulum, all the ones I saw were electric. Felix- actually a plastic-Soaky-head puppet of Felix mounted on a phonograph turntable for test shows- was indirectly the first TV cartoon- and as soon as TV was practical, movie cartoons of Felix rolled off the lines. The Cat clearly antedates both Bugs Bunny (l927) and Mickey Mouse (l928) and was produced by King Features Syndicate who also ran- Popeye the Sailor.
