the seditition act- law said citizens could be arrested or fined for criticizing the government.
I think it is too soon to even make a good guess. Obama has two years to strengthen or weaken his position. The Republicans will need to come up with an attractive candidate that will be acceptable to both the "Tea Party" people and the old guard Republicans. Whether Obama chooses to run again may depend on who steps forward for the Republicans- I am not sure that he will run again and if not, who can say who the Democratic candidate might be?
In at least two significant ways, Imperialism as a central economic and political impetus could threaten the American democratic system in an essential way. First, it could weaken the commitment of ordinary citizens to democratic processes and values. Second, and more drastically, it could cause sudden changes to governmental policies and powers through the action of elected and appointed officials -- which would weaken, eliminate, or otherwise transform constitutional checks and balances and other democratic 'basics' in the American system.
In the summer of 1798, the United States was close to war with France. Many members of the Federalist Party, including President John Adams and Federalist leaders in Congress, not only believed that their Democratic-Republican opponents were pro-French, but that their vocal opposition to administration policies was dangerous to the country's security. Therefore, to silence (as well as to weaken) the Democratic-Republican party, Congressional Federalists passed four statutes which are collectively known as the Alien and Sedition Acts.

I'm not sure, but i think republicans are like more right-wing, and democrats r more left-wing. Democrats would support, say, giving food stamps to the really poor even if they don't put anything in the system. Republicans would probably not, cuz it would weaken the economy.
One of the principles that many Republicans believe in is that government should have limited power. In places where the government has more power, there are often dictators, and very little freedom for the people.

The Federalist majority in Congress passed 4 laws in 1798 to make the U.S. more secure from alien (foreign) spies & domestic traitors. These Alien and Sedition acts were also intended to weaken Jefferson's Democratic-Republican Party, so of course they would oppose them. Jefferson was viewed as far too French & a French invasion was feared by the Federalists.
