When a bird migrates it is moving to a warmer spot in the world. How does it help them survive? well the temperature decreases in the winter dropping below zero, therefore not making the cold places a suitable place for the birds to live in. When they migrate they fly to some where closer to the equator where it is the hottest like Mexico. If exposed to the winters coldness for to long, the birds temperature will drop not giving the birds the right amount of body heat needed to survive. how those birds know when to migrate i assume the sudden drop in temperature gives them a hint that if they don't get a move on they're going to freeze.
the scientists put little collars on the birds neck and or wings that have a computer chip that a gps can track down therefor the scientists can locate the birds at all times
