Firepower. Mobility. Firepower and more firepower. It lacked "boots on the ground", an impact beyond pure force and any form of moral or constructive assistance at any level. It lacked commitment, a search for resolution or improvement of social conditions. The advantages failed. The troops did not.
They knew the lay of the land, while the Americans had to search their way through Vietnam. They dug tunnels and could kill the Americans in the tunnels. They used guerrilla warfare, which Americans were not used to fighting. Americans fought wars on clean battlefields, not in forests and swamps.
When Nixon became president he decided just to send planes filled with bombs and just bomb Vietnem without sending any troops. Just bomb them from aircrafts
