During the Civil War, the advantages that the Confederacy had over the Union were few in number but potent nonetheless. First was the much greater experience and skill of its leaders and soldiers in gunnery and horsemanship. Secondly, the Confederacy's fundamental goal was survival, not conquest, hence its sole military imperative was to fend off Northern attacks, rather than engage in any risky or costly offensive action.

With that said, the South hoped that in due time the Union would simply quit its battles to end the Southern rebellion. There is truth in that as in the North, there were a number of "peace groups" that believed too many lives were being lost and there was no end to the war in sight.
