Everyone. You, me, your family, your friends, the prime minister, everyone. Not one person has not been affected by animal testing. Without animal testing hospitals would be useless, you may as well stay at home. So animal testing effects everyone, every day, all the time...

A profound effect. Not only on animals, but people as well. I will start with animals. the tests themselves can be gruesome and cruel, the most infamous being the Draize test, which is when they put rabbits into a tiny box, with only their head sticking out, and put substances into their eyes, and wait to see what happens. Some rabbits have even been blinded this way. Another infamous test is called the LD50 test, where they force feed an animal a substance until 50% of the group die, and there is also an LD100, where 100% die.

If you harbour any illusions that the law ill protect animas in laboratories, I am afraid it is not true. In the United States, there is only one law that in any way protects animals in laboratories, and it is grossly inadequate. For one thing, it excludes 95% of the species used in research, has never once stopped an experiment from happening, no matter how painful, and is never enforced anyway.

There is also the shocking practice of actually stealing animals, usually cats and dogs, for sale to labs, so if you support animal research, you directly endanger your own pets.

What is really amazing is that they keep repeating the same research over and over, usually because researchers don't share the data with each other.

One chimpanzee in research, named Billy Jo, was in so much pain after waking up from a procedure, he chewed off his thumbs. Another chimp, Tom, woke up each morning gagging from years of having respirators and feeding tubes shoved down his throat.

Animals are also very psychologically damaged, sometimes to the point of insanity. One chimp, Jeannie, couldn't stand people even entering the room, and would have panic attacks. Rachel, another chimp, used to drag a tire everywhere with her, which was at first puzzling until they realized that in her 5x5x7 foot cage at the lab, it was the only thing she could hide behind when the lab techs came for her.

The fact is, there is no 'humane' way to conduct any kind of animal research.

Animal research is also very dangerous to people. Even in chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, the results will never be reliable in humans. For example, after twenty years of AIDS research on them, no chimpanzee has ever developed symptoms of AIDS, therefore any treatment would be unreliable. By the experimenters' own admission 92% of drugs tested on animals and found to be effective and safe, were found to be either ineffective or dangerous to people. This is because our systems work differently. The drug Vioxx, approved for human use after animal studies, cause 60,000 deaths in the U.S alone. Penicillen was kept off the market for a long time, when it could have saved a lot of lives because it was poisonous to the animals they tested it on.

Please, never but cosmetics that were tested on animals. Go to Peta.org, or Cruelty Free International for more information.

Are there animals used for making or testing cosmetics?

Yes, many animal byproducts are used within cosmetics and animals are routinely tested upon - even if a company claims not to support animal testing, they may use research based on animal testing by other companies or be owned by a parent company who use animal testing. Proctor & Gamble are the worst for this, they not only use animal testing but have supported grossly unethical animal testing and outright torment animals - aka Huntington Life Sciences.
